winter car maintenance tips

Winter can be especially tough on your vehicle, and the corrosive effects of salt, ice, and sleet can show when you try to sell your car. Your car’s resale value tends to drop if you neglect regular service, but following these winter car maintenance tips, you can keep your vehicle in optimum condition through the season.

Check your lights: According to AutoTrader, it’s important to check the lighting and electrical systems. The sparse daylight in winter makes you dependent on headlights more than the rest of the year. Check all the lights to make sure they’re working, but you should also consider a headlight restoration kit to turn those yellow headlight covers back to their original transparency.

Wash off salt: Getting rid of road salt and grit will preserve the exterior of your vehicle, preventing rust and damage to the body. Waxing is also useful for providing a protective layer on top of the paint.

Keep car fluids filled: Coolant or antifreeze levels should be maintained. Most technicians suggest using a 50/50-blend of coolant and water to prevent the engine block from freezing. Top off other fluids, like windshield de-icer.

Maintain Tires: You should always check the tires regularly. Look for places where the tire tread is wearing thin, and be sure to rotate the tires to equally distribute wear. Tire pressure can drop in the winter due to lower temperatures, so it’s important to strike a balance and keep it at the right pressure. Most cars come with optimum tire pressure listed on the inside of the door jamb on the driver’s side. Just make sure not to overfill them during the cold temperatures.
